Navigating Collaboratory's robust public search

Updated over a week ago

Want to get the scoop on how your institution is engaging with the community? Collaboratory’s search feature allows people to query an institution's Collaboratory to better understand how faculty, staff, and students are engaging in community.

With Collaboratory's search feature, you can combine a keyword search with an advanced filter, but not two advanced filters at the same time. You can see what activities, community organizations, courses, faculty/staff, and institutional units are engaged, based on your specific search query. Navigate to search by hovering over the left-hand navigation pane and selecting "Search".

All searches bring about returns through the lens of the activity: Collaboratory’s Units of Analysis. For additional information about interpreting Collaboratory search results, please see here.

HEADS UP! Do you need super-detailed info about a specific unit or initiative? Reach out to your Collaboratory administrator. They’ve got the keys to the more in-depth reporting features.

Example Search

As a Collaboratory visitor, I want to find out what the Department of Economics’ community engagement and public service looks like.

I select “Department of Economics” in the unit filter and run the search.

My results return the activities, community organizations, courses, faculty/staff, and units associated with the Department of Economics’ engagement. The image below illustrates the results that are displayed and how they relate to the Department of Economics.

Map-Based Search

After identifying the specific search terms and filters, selecting "Map Search" will run a map-based search. When running a map-based search, results are visualized on a geospatial map to provide a geographic understanding of the distribution of activities and community organizations that include a physical location.

Visitors can use the sidebar navigation to filter results by activity site locations, community organization locations, or both. Selecting a tile within the sidebar allows visitors to center a specific activity or community organization to better visualize the activity's or organization's proximity and reach. For activities that have multiple site locations, all locations are identified on the map.
