Faculty, staff, and students have different relationships to and roles within your Collaboratory, based on a variety of factors.
REMEMBER! Anyone can view your institution's public Collaboratory. The relationships and roles defined here affect only those who can login to your institution's Collaboratory.
Relationship vs. Role
In Collaboratory, "relationship" and "role" are defined as follows:
RELATIONSHIP: An individual's relationship to Collaboratory can be faculty, staff, and/or student. One's relationship to Collaboratory determines what features are available for a user, along with their role. For institutions that utilize Single Sign On (SSO) an individual's relationship is determined by their institution and assigned upon SSO authentication. For institutions that do not utilize SSO, members' relationships are self-identified.
If you log into Collaboratory through SSO, using your institutional credentials, then your relationship is identified via that authentication process and cannot be manually changed. If your relationship needs to be changed, you must work with your institution's IT department.
If your Collaboratory uses the manual registration process, then members can update their relationship via their Institutional Profile.
ROLE: An individual's role in Collaboratory can be member, moderator, or administrator. One's role in Collaboratory determines what administrator permissions (or lack thereof) are available to them.
HEADS UP! Some members may not have a relationship associated with their account. This is because some members, like alumni, may still be able to authenticate into their institution. If a member's institutional credentials are still active, they will be able to authenticate with their institution's Collaboratory via SSO. However, members with no relationship will have limited rights in Collaboratory.
User Permissions
The key relationship and role-based features for faculty/staff and students are described in the table, below. Individuals have the following permissions in Collaboratory, based on their relationship (faculty, staff, and/or student) and their role (member, moderator, or administrator):
